Ban The Bomb: Unlocking MGS V’s Secret Nuke Event

We’re about 11,000 nukes away from Snake and pals throwing a shindig in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain [official site] – disarming 11k of them, that is. You might’ve seen a while back that folks had uncovered cinematics celebrating nuclear disarmament, but it wasn’t entirely clear what they were or how to trigger them. Welp, Konami have now confirmed that, as guessed, it’ll trigger if every nuclear weapon players have built is destroyed (they’re part of the Forward Operating Base PvP invasion stuff). They’re issuing daily updates on disarmament progress too.

Rocket League Portal DLC Doesn’t Contain Portals

A free Portal-themed set of cosmetic items and flourishes will arrive in Rocket League [official site] tomorrow. There are gel trails for your nitro boosts, cake hats and decals, and heart-breaking Companion Cube antennae. There’s plenty more along those lines as well, and it’s all free, but I’m perhaps unfairly disappointed by the lack of actual portals. I hadn’t even considered how amazing it would be to attach a portal to the area above my own goalmouth, causing stray shots that enter to emerge right by the opponent’s goal. And if the cars could dash through portals as well? Beautiful chaos.

Moral Dilemma: It’s Them Or You In Who Must Die

Who must die? You decide! Playing a doctor surveying patients through a bank of CCTV monitors (showing real FMV!), in Who Must Die [official site] you’ll need to figure out which is “contaminated” and must… well, you know. You have the power to tinker with their environments, running tests, then once you think you’ve sussed who the infected individual is, you can choose to kill them. If that doesn’t sit well with you, you can turn a gun on yourself. These are your options in what is ultimately a brutal mix of Cluedo and Guess Who that will test your moral fiber.

Hainted-Painted Love In After School

After School [official site] is lovely interactive story/point and click game that’s entirely hand painted on paper using pencils and watercolours. It tracks the solitary ponderings of a love-struck and lonely schoolgirl who stops by a boy’s house every evening at dusk before heading home. Inconspicuously, she peers in through his window and imagines what life would be like if he took more notice of her. Instead, he reads a book, every night, paying her no mind. What if one day they ran away together, she wonders. What if one day she tapped the window to grab his attention?

Have You Played… Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

With an army of palleteswapped streetpunks, health-restoring food hidden in trash cans, fragile melee weapons, rare firearms, and cheery electronic music, Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl [official site] is the finest Streets of Rage homage beat ‘em up I’ve played in years. Even more impressive is that the free game does this from a first-person perspective in a modified version of the Doom engine.

The Sunday Papers

Sundays are for asking for feedback about the Sunday Papers. See the end of this post.

  • At Zam, Jody MacGregor spoke to be Morgan Jaffit, designer on Freedom Force, about his work at Irrational and his transition to indie and the creation of Hand of Fate.
  • Imagine this: you’re a young game designer in the early 2000s and your first real job in the industry is at Irrational Games’ new Australian studio, answering to the Americans but given a surprising amount of leeway. You’ve been entrusted with writing their new game’s script, which you email over to the States, directly to studio head Ken Levine – already kind of an intimidating legend for his work on System Shock 2 – then wait an entire week for a reply. When it arrives, it’s four words long and just says, “Formatted wrong. Do again.”

What To Expect In Europa Universalis IV: The Cossacks

Ahead of its The Cossacks expansion release on Tuesday, Europa Universalis IV [official site] developers Paradox have pulled together all of the features the sixth major update has to offer in one handy developer diary. Expect improvements and more in-depth explorations of domestic politics, culture, diplomacy, and maintaining peaceful inter-territorial relations in exchange for a little coin. Running countries, eh? Easy when you know how.
