Guild Wars 2 players hold gatherings in gratitude to laid-off ArenaNet staff

With MMO developer ArenaNet recently becoming the latest in a long string of studios laying off developers, Guild Wars 2 players have been gathering in the game to show their appreciation for those who find themselves without jobs.

Multiple events saw people from all over the world meeting up under the Lion’s Arch, toasting with body-changing tonics, and setting off fireworks in commemoration of the developers’ hard work.

Hearthstone’s Year of the Dragon is coming in hot

The Year of the Dragon is sweeping into Blizzard’s collectable card game Hearthstone, burning up the previous Year of the Raven and bringing with it a whole lot of changes. Here’s creative director Ben Thomson and new executive producer Chris Sigaty giving the bullet points: a story running across all three expansions; new solo content; and hints towards a whole bunch of meta changing card tweaks.

Priceless Play – 2 March 2019

Hey, why are people so tired on the first of April? It’s because they just finished a March of 31 days!

I was taking a casual stroll through the ‘net, and discovered the super legit wiseoldsayings.com page for March. There are a bunch of wise old authors saying wise old things about wise old March, though I’m particularly partial to “In like a lion, out like a lamb,” which the wise old folks over there seem to have forgotten. What gives?

Among the many multitudes of March, from Ides to Ash to Mardi Gras, March is a month of opposites; beginning in winter and ending in spring. Keeping this in mind, I’ve decided to dedicate this month in our little corner of RPS to opposites. Fast and slow, night and day, sword and shield… Structuralist opposites are all around us. Using one as a foil for the other can help to bring out what’s best in each. Below are some games which represent two sides of the same coin.

What are we all playing this weekend?

2019 seemed to go by awfully quickly, winter giving way to spring then summer whipping through autumn and back around to winter, but here we are in what I can only conclude is 2020. Weird year, 2019, in so many ways. But that’s behind us now. My first question: what are your resolutions for 2020? I have one more question, then many answers.

What are you playing this weekend? Here’s what we’re clicking on!

Intruder infiltrates Steam early access after seven years scouting

Intruder has entered early access on Steam. This is a surreal sentence to write, given that RPS first covered the asymmetrical team shooter back in March 2012. Similar to the classic Splinter Cell multiplayer mode, one team are sneaky infiltrators with a variety of gadgets but limited firepower, while the other team are heavily armed and armoured guards. Superboss Games have been testing the game with a drip-feed of invited players for years now, and it’s well fleshed out already. They’ve finally flung open the floodgates today – check out the Steam launch trailer below.

Boneworks looks like the next step for VR interactivity

Climbing a ladder seems like such a mundane thing to be excited about, but think about how complex it really is. You need both hands, feet, coordination, balance and power – something that seemed nigh impossible to simulate in VR with limited head and hand tracking until Boneworks surfaced today. As a game, I’m not sure what to make of it, but as a showcase of how solid a VR world can appear, developers Stress Level Zero have me impressed. Below, a trailer plus a longer video putting the game through its paces and demonstrating Valve’s upcoming ‘Knuckles’ controllers.

Humble Monthly offers Fighting, Sneaking and Viking for cheap

Another impressive month of deals in the Humble Monthly – I’m impressed at how consistently good Humble’s subscribe-o-bundle has been this past year, and the next set headlines with a trio of gems. Northgard, Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden and Absolver cover a wide spread of genres, but all three games are united by one common thread; they all got free expansions recently. You can snag all three together for a mere $12 (roughly £9), and you’ll get an extra sack-full of mystery games at the end of the month. See some trailers and thoughts on the three games below.
