PSA: RPS is now owned by Gamer Network

Kieron and Jim, yesterday.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun began in 2007 with a modest goal and in the ten years since has grown and grown, from that first post to a glistening archive of over 33,000, and from four founders working in their spare time to a hugely successful enterprise with seven full-time staff. We achieved our goal, but our ambitions have grown bigger.

We want to keep growing and to build a better, more entertaining website about PC games, and we can do that better with help. To that end, we’re excited to announce that RPS is now owned by Gamer Network.

What does this actually mean? … [visit site to read more]

Premature Evaluation: Veil of Crows

Every week we launch Brendan from a catapult into the early access fortress. This time, the haphazard RPG adventuring of Veil of Crows [official site]

I’ve just murdered four villagers. I was grumpy and I wanted their village, so I went in with eleven peasants and killed them and took their lumberyard. To be fair, they murdered four of us right back. Sadly, all the bodies now lying on the village grounds are practically indistinguishable – all the same greyish peasant corpse. I own a village now, but I am still grumpy. Is it because the kingdom who once guarded the lumberyard are now sending an army to take back their rightful land? No. It’s just because Veil of Crows is messy, buggy and not very fun.

Ace one-line platformer Wibble Wobble gets multiplayer

Wibble Wobble, the splendid high score-chasing endless platformer set on a single undulating line, now has a local multiplayer version. Wibble Wobble was great in singleplayer and it’s great in multiplayer now. The multiplayer version has drifted around events for a bit, including several Wild Rumpuses I helped run/didn’t wholly ruin, but now it’s out pay-what-you-want on Itch for all. Grab some chums and prepare to enjoy a great many deaths and little victories. … [visit site to read more]

The tension & elation of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

‘I don’t get it, it’s just a big deathmatch, right?’ is pretty much how I reacted to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds [official site] on first viewing. Following the route of other Hunger Royale and online survival games it seemingly arrived from nowhere, with a marketing campaign focused on partnerships with popular Twitch streamers to quickly build up a huge word of mouth following. PUBG (an inelegant but much required acronym) surged to the top of the Steam charts, where it has remained since entering early-access, racking up over 2 million sales in the process.

On a surface level it’s hard to grasp exactly why it’s so popular. This is a game people are purposefully running on minimum graphics settings for an all important FPS boost and as a result is fairly plain looking, if not ugly, while its collection of guns, pans and painkillers are standard enough fare. I understand the appeal now though. In more than 100 hours with the game, it has made me feel terrified more than any horror game, hands shaking as I cling to the scant cover provided by a lone tree. The flip-side of that intensity comes from a feeling of real satisfaction when you meet with success, squeals of elation have punctured the dawn as the game’s hooks drag me repeatedly past respectable hours.

Player-driven MMO Ashes of Creation wows Kickstarter

The big-money early days of video game crowdfunding may be over but lawks, look at fantasy MMORPG Ashes of Creation [official site] go! Gabbing about a world where quests can have dramatic lasting effects, crafting matters, and players can build, run, and destroy cities, Ashes of Creation hit its initial Kickstarter goal of $750,000 (£580k) in under one day. Developers Intrepid Studios say they’ve got enough money in private backing to make a basic version but they will use Kickstarter cash to fancy up their gamebicycle with stickers, reflectors, spoke beads, and clackers. They also make a curious promise to refund everyone if Ashes doesn’t come out. Check out the pitch: … [visit site to read more]

Wot I Think: Flinthook

Flinthook [official site] combines everything I loved about Rogue Legacy with far slicker platforming action, based around some of gaming’s greatest icons: grappling hooks and stylish slow motion. It’s a tremendous game that I’ve been hooked on since launch.

Nier: Automata’s arena DLC 3C3C1D119440927 released

Nier: Automata [official site] is so wonderful and complete in itself that I might be happy to skip DLC and not even play again for a fair while. I’ll return later, absolutely, but for now I might pass on the DLC released today. 3C3C1D119440927 is its name, and adding arena battles and costumes is its game. Given that this is Nier: Automata, I suspect it may be more complicated than that. I mean, beyond the fact that it has battles against the CEOs of Square Enix and PlatinumGames; that’s not even a secret. Here, have a gander at the DLC’s launch trailer: … [visit site to read more]
