AMD’s Radeon R9 380X Graphics And ‘Crimson’ Driver

XFX's 380X - other 380X's are available...

Rejoice, for among we mere mortals walks a new AMD graphics card. But hang on. Is it actually new? If it isn’t, what is going on with PC graphics these days and why do we keep having to make do with these thinly disguised rebadges? The answer is simple and the solution, happily, is imminent. Meanwhile, AMD has a new graphics driver out, and by that I mean not just a driver update but a whole new interface and platform. Give it up for AMD Crimson and kiss goodbye to that awful Catalyst interface.

Take the jump for an overview of the new AMD Radeon R9 380X and Crimson and a hint of why 2016 is shaping up to be the most exciting year in PC graphics since the early days of hardware T&L…

Fallout 4: Robot Retirement

Continuing a perma-death diary in Fallout 4, in which I begin with absolutely nothing other than a plan to to voyage around only the outermost periphery of the world.

I’m very close to ‘home’ now, with the only remaining event of note being an encounter with a roaming trader whose Brahmin is stuck in some trees. She doesn’t realise it’s stuck in some trees, however, and as she acts like quite the badass I quietly decide not to prick her pomp. And then, astoundingly, I’m back. Home, sweet never even remotely my home. But it is where I left my power armour and a few of my lesser spare weapons, so the meaning is there even if the comfort is not.

I clamber back inside my battered suit, and an immediate angry beeping reminds me that, unless I find another Fusion Core extremely soon, its time is almost up.

Space Engineers Dev Diary Explains Landing On Planets

Last month, Keen Software House added planets and moons to their Early Access intergalactic sandbox adventure Space Engineers [official site] as “a result of some early access player feedback”. In what Keen’s founder Marek Rosa labels a “game-changing feature”, players can now manipulate the landscape as they see fit – leaving behind a persistent footprint in their wake. In a new developer diary, Rosa explains how he and his team arrived at the decision to add the game’s most ambitious feature yet.

William Pugh’s Studio Taking Flight With Heist Game

A little while back William Pugh (who partnered with Davey Wreden on The Stanley Parable), Dominik Johann, Jack de Quidt and Sean O’Dowd formed a studio called Crows Crows Crows and began teasing their first game [official site countdown thinger] via an ARG. For those of you (and by “you” I secretly mean “us”) who have been intrigued by the Crows Crows Crows emails but lacked the time and patience to get anywhere with the ARG , a lovely email has arrived to spell out a bunch more information about the project.

Apparently we are to expect a “sort of heist game” involving the voice of Simon Amstell at around 5pm tomorrow (Friday 4 December). Here’s the relevant bits of the email:

Have You Played… Johann Sebastian Joust?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

I adore Johann Sebastian Joust [official site] so much that I have vowed never to play it again. I like it too much. It’s too good. I get too into it. It brings out bad things in me. Never let me play it again but please, please play it at my funeral. As you stand on the shore of the loch, please play Joust around my chain-wrapped corpse before you heave me into the dark waters. Give me one last look at my true love, the game I call Shoving.

Total War: Warhammer’s Greenskin Campaign Detailed

The Total War: Warhammer [official site] campaign map is lovely. Creative Assembly have released a 16 minute long “Greenskins Campaign Walkthrough” that shows the strategic side of the game in detail for the first time. Auto-resolving battles as he goes, the narrator takes us on a quick tour of the portions of the Warhammer Fantasy world that will be included in the initial release (the game is the first part in a trilogy that will combine to make one enormous map). I’m particularly taken by the mighty bridges that dwarven engineers have built to span mountain ranges, as well as the concept of ‘fightiness’.
