Cube Escape: Paradox will creep out September 20th

The next Rusty Lake game would be creepy enough without entwining itself with a live-action film, but I’m glad it is. Both Cube Escape: Paradox and Paradox: A Rusty Lake Film will come out on September 20th, telling a criss-crossing story about a detective who gets trapped in a room by an ominous crow. The film and one version of the game will be free, but there’s a paid-for premium version too – though no details yet on how that’ll differ.

The Cube Escape games are point and clickers set in Rusty Lake, a surreal world populated by anthropomorphic horrors. Think Twin Peaks, dialled up to 11.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 delayed into 2019

With September dropping out of warp in only a few hours, the publishers of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 today announced that ah, no, the spaceship-battling RTS will not launch in September after all. It’s delayed into January 2019 to allow extra time to polish and improve it (hot tip: paint the game red, it’ll run faster), as is the usual delay way. But! The developers plan to use this time to expand the planned cooperative support into its three story campaigns, so that’s nice. You can use this time to practise your Tyranid gurglegrowling for top Skype fun with your pal.

Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord’s single player campaign is full of thugs and bog men

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is the medieval war ‘em up that often pops up to say: “Hello, I still look good.” We have seen its sieges, its horse archers, and even played some of its multiplayer sword-clashing. But at this year’s Gamescom, I played some of the single player campaign. And oh yes, that’s the good stuff. I played as Valtis, an athletic sword-swinging dude from the Southern Empire who can also throw javelins. I like javelins. I like the sound they make as they whoosh by and impale a man.

No Man’s Sky’s first community challenge is a scavenger hunt for buried treasure

Most studios would be content with a re-launch of their game making it a massively played best-seller, but Hello Games have more planned for their procedural space sandbox, No Man’s Sky. The studio have their first season of community events planned out, and the first, detailed in this official blog post, goes live today.

Buckle your swashes and put an eyepatch on your space-helmet, as there’s a hunt on for buried treasure in a remote corner of the galaxy. It’s not a massive undertaking, but should help bring its community together in search of underground loot and some extra cosmetic items, with more goodies coming in the following weeks.

Offline play and GOTV to become free in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

It hasn’t yet surfaced at the time of writing, but Valve have stated in their latest patch notes for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive that a free version of the ultra-popular esports FPS should be available “later today”. While limited to offline play only (presumably including bots) and watching other players through their highly flexible GOTV spectator mode, it should finally provide a free demo of sorts for the game.

This update also permanently retires the old ‘legacy’ UI, in favour of the fancy new Panorama style, shown above, although this seems to be a point of some contention.

Jurassic World Evolution hatches a toothsome new Challenge mode next month

As authentic as dino-park management sim Jurassic World Evolution looked and sounded, it was ironically a bit toothless, so said Fraser Brown in his review. While it tried to nudge players into creative park designs and risky moves through its staff division system, there was little incentive to take absurd, John Hammond-like risks. That may change soon.

Headed to the game on September 13th is a major patch – update 1.4 – that includes a free new Challenge mode with four different difficulty settings and some fun new twists. Check out a developer video tour of new mode below.

First person puzzler The Bradwell Conspiracy makes its mysterious debut

There’s been an incident of the explosive sort. You’re trapped, alone – save for some mysterious voices broadcasting to you – in a strange and ruined near-future complex at Stonehenge. Sounds like the start for a first-person puzzle adventure to me, and The Bradwell Conspiracy seems happy to play the role.

Announced today, The Bradwell Conspiracy is to be the first game from new outfit A Brave Plan, published by Bossa Studios. They’re calling it a “narrative-driven first person experience” which perhaps downplays the puzzle bits, but that scene above sure looks like a conundrum to me. There’s no release date yet, but Bossa say it’s “Coming soon”. Below, a moody teaser trailer.
