Hollow Knight and the art of consistency

Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 4 receive another supply drop of giveaway DLC

Ever since EA announced that season passes were on the way out, they’ve been showering the (still very active) Battlefield 1 & Battlefield 4 communities with giveaways of premium-priced DLC, for those who haven’t taken the plunge yet. Accompanying Battlefield 1’s Summer Update (mostly balance tweaks and quality-of-life improvements, according to the patch notes) comes a triple giveaway. BF1 players can pick up the game’s final expansion – Apocalypse – free, while BF4 players can snag the Naval Strike and China Rising DLC, all until August 7th.

League of Legends’s experimental Nexus Blitz mode may become permanent

At this point, the MOBA formula feels as well-worn as football, so one of the biggest games out there (potentially) introducing a permanent new playmode is exciting. Nexus Blitz is a new map and mode in testing for League of Legends, currently playable in early form in the Public Beta Environment. It’s a small, messy map with one split lane (plus jungle) where teams are thrown rapidly into combat and spurred on by bonus events and objectives. If all goes to plan, it’ll be a permanent addition to the game, as could any future Experimental mode, as described here.

Video: This Is The Police 2 is like trying to win XCOM with the cast of Police Academy

As a great scientist once said (or maybe it was Jeff Goldblum): “A butterfly can flap its wings in Peking and in Central Park you get rain instead of sunshine.” Meanwhile, in This Is The Police 2 an idiot cop empties pepper spray into their own eyes and a woman burns to death because I don’t have enough law enforcers to answer her distress call. This is an everyday occurrence in Weappy Studio’s cop management sim, a place where the daft and the disturbing rub shoulders on a daily basis and it all comes to a head in XCOM-ish tactical missions that can go as horribly wrong as everything else. As demonstrated in this video.

Star Traders: Frontiers warps out of early access today

Don’t let the ‘Traders’ part of the title put you off – while space-adventure sandbox RPG Star Traders: Frontiers offers the opportunity to barter your way to glory, you can just as easily fight, scavenge, explore or even spy your way to fame and financial solvency. Much loved by Sin Vega when she poked around it in early access (especially for its portrayal of piracy), the game is out now, after a particularly active stint in early access.

Trüberbrook looks like a dream and handles like a nightmare

I have never seen Twin Peaks. That’s alright, though, because a lot of people I know really like it. I’ve been around them going on about cherry pie and the red room for long enough that when I am told “And of course there’s some inspiration from Twin Peaks, too!” I know to read it as “This is going to be weird; will probably feature coffee.” Sure enough, the little bit of Trüberbrook I played demonstrated weirdness (coffee as yet unconfirmed but I suspect probable).

Trüberbrook piqued my interest a while ago, not because of the touted Twin Peaksiness, but because it has physical sets. I can’t not love handmade miniatures (so I was also very pleased by, for example, Lumino City, and am keeping a close eye on Harold Halibut as well). It’s also a point and click mystery adventure, which is a handy intersection of interests for me.
