That’s no moon, that’s my wife! Nights of Azure 2 due in October

The busty action of Nights of Azure will return on October 24th when Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon hits our shores, publishers Koei Tecmo have announced. The action-RPG sequel will continue to explore the demon-ridden Europe-ish fantasy world, this time with a new group of gal pals. One of ’em has woken up as a half-demon after being sacrificed by a shadowy cult, see, which is a classic setup for a firm female friendship. The first Nights of Azure only came west in February but Gust have been working on the sequel for a fair while. Here, have a look: … [visit site to read more]

The RPG Scrollbars: Quests Done Quick II

It’s Summer Games Done Quick time again! You know what that means. The final seal has been broken, the rivers are turning to blood, and High Dread Azagorath is free to destroy the land. But while people wait, they’re doing speed-runs. And in celebration of that, I thought I’d take a dig through the archives for a few particularly impressive and interesting ones that take that whole idea of a fifty hour epic and beat it down so quickly, the hero’s hometown doesn’t even have time to finish smouldering.

Skyrim Beyond: Bruma mod travels to familiar lands

A corner of the world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has arrived in Skyrim with the launch of Beyond Skyrim: Bruma [official site], a mod set around Cyrodil’s city of Bruma. Unlike the still-in-development mod remaking Oblivion inside Skyrim, this mod is telling new stories set around the time of Skryim – 200 years after Oblivion. As well as recreating and updating the Bruma region, it brings new quests, characters, weapons, armour, music, and all that, plus a whopping 24,000-ish lines of voiced dialogue from a cast including professional actors. Fancy! Here, check out this trailer: … [visit site to read more]

Summer Games Done Quick is speedrunning away

Seven days of speedrunning have started, as the livestreamed run-o-rama Summer Games Done Quick returned on Sunday. Runners will blaze through 140 games during this week to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), and we can watch the whole shebang on Twitch. I’m a virtual potterer myself, happy to amble through games staring at digital trees and toilets, but I’m always hugely impressed by Games Done Quick. Some players speed by with pure skill, mastering how a game is meant to be played, and that’s great. It’s also great when skill goes into making the game do things it’s not meant to, carefully breaking it to cut corners. … [visit site to read more]

The Sunday Papers

Sundays are for… I don’t know. We can do anything, can’t we? The world is our lobster, as the saying goes. Let’s start with what we do know, and round up the week’s writing about games.

International treasure Robert Yang wrote this past week about the indiepocalypse, and his points are worth thinking about as always. I have friends who making a living from their art and I have friend who make art in their spare time, and sometimes the latter group produce more because they have non-artistic jobs that spare them from the stresses of living on the breadline. … [visit site to read more]
