Send In The Clones: EVE Online Going Free-to-play

Space-bastard MMO EVE Online [official site] will go free-to-play in November, devs CCP announced today. It’ll introduce a new limited character type that anyone can play for free, keeping The Good Stuff for people who pay a subscription fee. Which is probably a good way to get more people into EVE. It has brought us exciting space-stories of grand betrayals, bankers funding wars and maybe destabilising EVE, propaganda, blockading trade hubs, notorious space-lords, and more than I can reasonably fit in this one sentence, but EVE is not an inviting game. This might help.

BT Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Valve

British Telecommunications (BT) have filed a lawsuit against Valve claiming patent infringement. The action was brought “based on Valve’s continued willful infringement” of four patents (I’ll go into what they are in a moment) and was filed in Delaware on 28 July.

Charge! Battlefield 1 Open Beta Is Live

How does Battlefield 1 [official site] tie into Battlefield 1942? Will this prequel’s story be impossible to follow without playing the other 1941 games first – or at least reading the extended universe novels? How many confusing audiologs will be awkward in-jokes? Is it even the same timeline? Finally we can discover the answers to these questions and more, as Electronic Arts today launched a free open beta test for the World War 1 multiplayer first-person shooter. Wot I Think: Tempest

The pirate’s life is a good one. Rum, sea shanties, being trapped in your sinking vessel as it falls victim to a gargantuan sea kraken. Ah, yes, a marvelous misadventure. There’s definitely some appeal to taking to the seven seas and plundering all the gold from unsuspecting merchant vessels, and this is what Tempest [official site], a low-fantasy on the waves, has in mind. ISLANDS Brings Beautiful Vignettes To Greenlight

I am getting the strongest sense of deja vu with Carl Burton’s gorgeous Greenlight submission, ISLANDS. Like, to the point where I was so sure we already had an article talking about how gorgeous the screenshots were and was about to skip writing this because of already writing it.

PlayStation Now Is Available Now On PC In UK And US

PlayStation is out now in the UK and US (and Belgium and the Netherlands). The subscription service, which lets you play old PlayStation 3 games by streaming them to PC, costs £13/$20 a month. When it was announced that the service was coming to PC last week we ran a list of our favourite games from the 400 available through the service, but now they’ve added six more including the excellent Studio Ghibli-animated Ni No Kuni.
