Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.
It’s a shut-em-up. Only way to handle a character with a loaded pun.

We’re coming to the end of the Summer Steam Sale so chances are you’ve picked up the things you’d already got your eye on, but there are always games that sneak under the radar or come from genres you might usually ignore. That’s why we’ve put together our final recommendation list. Here’s a whole list of things we love and why we think they’re worth your time! (Don’t forget to check out our earlier picks and the comments, though – I picked up a bunch of games that had escaped my own notice through reader enthusiasm…)
I can’t say I’d even heard of Parkan: The Imperial Chronicles, but some folks seem awfully excited that the Russian space sim/FPS/RPG from 1997 is now on GOG – and in English for the first time. I am certainly interested in gems we missed here in the UK during the years we got our games in boxes from shops, when we rarely saw games from Russia and Eastern Europe. A game where you can do the usual merc-o-pirate sandbox space stuff, go on foot in FPS action, and build colonies… I’m interested!
Sorry. The county of Cornwall has spirited away this week’s column. Searches of sea-sluiced caves and Bucca-infested tin mine shafts have turned up nothing. My animal scouts – grey seals, peregrine falcons, and beadlet anemones – have probed and quartered and frisked fruitlessly. The only thing I can offer you today is bafflement. Beyond yonder html horizon lurks not one, not three, but two foxers. Assuming you aren’t too busy plotting the demise of fish-fixated Italian soldiery (the last seven days/minutes of communal Combat Mission have gone well though the commenter-controlled Kiwis are now fighting without Crecy, their lionhearted Crusader) I invite you to spend an hour or two reinstating vowels and decrypting collage components. … [visit site to read more]
The ABZÛ [official site] E3 trailer was one of my highlights of the show with its colourful underwater world, lovely soundtrack and promisingly fluid movement. There’s now a slightly extended trailer online showing more in the way of gameplay. If you watched the E3 one which I posted a LOT of the scenes will be familiar but there are some slightly extended sections which show you a bit more of the world and a touch more of the view which looks like someone definitely playing:
Headlander [official site] made me think of Wall-E, except there’s only one human left in the robot-run offworld colony. Technically, the bots are humans of a sort, the entire race having transferred their consciousness from its fleshy confines into new robotic bodies. Those robots are under the authority of a wicked computer and it’s up to the last meat-person (YOU) to save the day. Problem is, you’re outnumbered. Oh, and you don’t have a body. Cue body-switching, ability-gathering, side-scrolling action.
Say, do you like life-or-death decisions, puzzles, room escapes, and murderous scenarios which force you into all of the aforementioned? If so, do have a look at Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma [official site]. The third and final game in the horror trilogy started by Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors has launched on PC – only two days after the Vita and 3DS releases. Publishers Spike Chunsoft have been releasing more games rounds our way lately, such as Danganronpa, but a near-simultaneous launch is a rare treat. Well, as much as any horrific scenario can be a treat.
